Aftermath of plane crash in Milano:Ibas to recover data from computers in Pirelli Tower
With the Milano assignment, Ibas has received its largest
single assignment in the field of data recovery ever. The employer awarding
the assignment is Regionale Lombardia, which is a regional authority
comparable to a Norwegian county-municipality. Ibas was chosen as the best
among a field of international competitors, involving several other data
recovery companies.
Technically
complicated
The scope of the assignment is not yet fully known. This
week Ibas will begin recovery of 23 PCs from attorneys' offices on the 26th
floor. The data on the computers in these offices are considered to be the
most valuable in the building, and this is the floor where the plane
crashed. Because of significant water damage to the floors below, Ibas may
also be receiving computers from lower floors as well in the weeks to come.
The computers will be transported to Kongsvinger for washing and cleaning
before the data recovery work begins in Ibas' laboratories. From experience
we know that computers damaged by water, fire and smoke pose a technically
complicated challenge. It is therefore still not clear when the work will be
completed.
- Strategically important agreement
With more than 20 years experience in data recovery, Ibas
has built up world-leading know-how in the field. The company was earlier
involved in a number of assignments where computers have been subjected to
considerable water and fire damage, the most famous of which being the
Sleipner wreck in November 1999.
- The Pirelli job is a strategically important assignment for Ibas. The
fact that the regional Italian authorities are showing such confidence in us
in this very important case, strengthens our position as a leading supplier
of data recovery in Europe, says Arve Saghaug, Managing Director of Ibas
AS.
Facts about plane crash
A 67-year-old Swiss pilot was flying the light aircraft when
it crashed into the Pirelli Tower in Milano on 18 April this year. Three
persons died in the accident. The circumstances surrounding the event and
the reasons for the plane crash are still not known. The building is 127
metres high and is considered to be the world's largest building made of
concrete. The building has 30 floors, and the plane crashed into the 26th
floor. The office building houses regional Italian authorities and is an
important financial centre.
